dear bella,
sometimes i feel like my heart is going to burst from loving you so much. you are honestly one of the sweetest little girls i've ever known. honestly. i'm not just saying that because you're my daughter. your heart is just so precious.
tonight, i got home a little later than normal. you jumped into my arms and squeezed around my neck and said "mama, i yuv you so much. i'm so glad you came home." best welcome home there ever was. you also went over to emmy and wrapped your arm around her and pulled her in until you were cheek to cheek. you said "i yuv you, emmy. i'm so glad you're my sister." i got a little teary. you are just so sensitive and empathetic toward others and i hope that never changes. daddy and i want to do everything we can to nurture that part of you because it is one of the greatest qualities i think a person can have.
you also are very sensitive to spiritual things, which makes me so proud. the other day aunt holly came to watch you and she was having trouble with something and told you she couldn't figure it out. you told her "it's okay, aunt holly. jesus will help you. he died on the cross and rose again!" oh.my.word. just adorable. you love praying every night and you always remember to pray for people who are sick or in the hospital. it's just so cute and i know it must be music to god's ears. you have a bible story dvd that we watch many nights after bath, before bedtime. you have some of the stories memorized. the other night as we were watching the story of ruth, i heard you murmur "where you go, i will go. your people will be my people, your god will be my god." your favorite stories right now are sampson, hannah and esther.
you also never meet a stranger. i love that about you, too! i tell you all the time one of my favorite things about you is how friendly you are. we were at target the other day and we ran into a mama pushing her three children in a shopping cart. immediately, you perked right up. "oh, hi guys! i'm bella!" and then, later in the checkout line you spotted another cartload of kids in the aisle next to us and said the same thing. the cashier asked me if you knew them. i told her no, that you just make friends every where you go :) you wave, say hi and introduce yourself to everyone. you get so proud of yourself and tell me "i was sayin hi to all the people, mom!"
this weekend we went for a little getaway to portland with meme, auntie, uncle brian and jude and lucy. you were SO excited to go stay in a hotel you kept asking and asking when we were leaving for our trip. mama, auntie and meme took the baby girls to a shower we went to saturday afternoon and you and jude stayed with daddy and uncle brian. you were SO excited to go "swimming". daddy quickly learned that "swimming" for you means playing on the ladder of the pool and sitting on the side with your feet dangling in. on sunday, you and jude wanted to take another trip to the pool so we took you down for a "swim". it was crowded with middle school girls. you kept escaping to the hot tub and sitting amongst the girls, like you were one of them. you'd try to talk to them and be in on their conversations. i went to get you to bring you back over to the pool area and you said "mom, can you just go back over there, please?" so funny. you are 3 going on 13 sometimes. and when we left, you waved and said goodbye the entire way to the door. i just love your confidence around other people, even those older than you.
you are also so grateful. you thank me for everything! "thanks for taking me to target, mom." or "thanks for making me this sandwich, mom." it's so cute and i just love how thankful you are. not only to me, but to daddy and everyone in your life that gives you their time and attention or brings you gifts.
we have also been in a very challenging stage at times as well... for a couple of weeks you were throwing the HUGEST fits at naptime and bedtime. it was so draining on me and daddy. we tried everything, and nothing worked until we started ignoring you, let you cry/fight it out. it took a couple of nights but once you learned we weren't giving in, you are back to going to bed easily, the way you always have. i'm so thankful! you are so very strong willed... i know i will be thankful you have this characteristic later on in life but in your almost-three-year-old little body, it's challenging to deal with at times! you like to think you are in charge. the other day i got very frustrated with you and yelled at you. later, i was laying down next to you and said "bella, i'm sorry for yelling." you began stroking the side of my face and said "it's okay, mama. you just need to listen to me!" i quickly reminded you that you needed to listen to ME. but i don't think it's sunk in yet, because you've said that to me a few more times. jesse is a family friend of ours that watches you and emmy a couple times a week. you love her and have a very special relationship with her! the other day as she was leaving, you excitedly exclaimed "bye, jesse! thanks for listening to me and obeying!" oh, dear.
we're also having some battles lately over clothes. you want to wear dresses all the time, everywhere. i let you wear your princess dress up clothes alll the time. to the grocery, out to eat, at bedtime... but we've had some battles over wearing play clothes so you can get in the dirt, or saving nicer dresses for days we're not going to the park... you are such a combo of girly-girl and tomboy, i love it. but. i wasn't expecting to fight over clothes for a few more years...
i am seeing more and more lately just how smart you are. of course i'm going to think you're brilliant since i'm your mama, but you really are so smart, bella! the past couple of weeks, you've learned all of your letters. i can't believe it, but you can recognize all of them and it just makes me so proud. we're working on their sounds, but i love quizzing you on them because i am just amazed at how much you know. your favorite show right now is "super why". it's really taught you so much... i tried so many times to do letter flashcards with you, and the letter magnets on our fridge, but your attention span wouldn't last but seconds. however, you will sit and watch "super why" and it totally teaches you! so i really don't mind letting you watch a couple of episodes each day. we use the show as rewards and incentives for you and it works really well! you also love watching pbs kids in the morning while you eat your breakfast.
it's getting warmer, so we've been able to go to the park a few times this past week! very exciting. we've also been going on runs together as a family. daddy pushes you and ems in the stroller and i run beside. you haven't liked that much, since you want to be running with me. you've been very, very attached to me these days. when you were crying alot at night, the next morning you'd say "mama, i was crying about you." when i asked you why you'd say "because i just wanted to lay down with you." it breaks my heart and makes me happy all at the same time that you love spending time with me. i hope you always will :)
you've also been eating SO much better! we've been so proud of you. some new things you've tried and really liked: chicken tiki masala and wonton soup! i've been very pleasantly surprised. you love rice cakes, pizza, mexican food and continue to be my bread girl. the other night, aunt holly and uncle scott watched you and ems so daddy and i could go on a date. they ordered pizza and you ate THREE whole pieces!! i couldn't believe it. you talked for days about how yummy that pizza was ;) your favorite place is still the bagel shop downtown, and i think we owe you a trip there as a reward for going to bed so much better!
i just love you so much, my sweet girl. you are my pride and joy and just one of the biggest blessings in my life. i love watching you grow and experience the world, and most of all i love making memories with you. i love who you are and am so proud of you.
love you to the moon and back (and back again),
mama
