lucy mae.

meet my niece!

lucy mae keezer was born on her uncle nick's birthday, march 23, 2012! she weighed 8 pounds, 9 ounces and has a head full of black hair! i was so excited and grateful to be able to be at the hospital for her birth. when my nephew, jude, was born nick&i were living in dallas and i had to hear about everything afterwards, and only saw pictures of him until i met him a few months later. it was heartbreaking! so this time was so much fun. i got to snuggle with her alot (she's quite the cuddle bug) and be there with my sister which was so special.

bella LOVED her new cousin! she is a huge fan of babies right now and is such a little mama. it's so fun to watch that maternal instinct come out in her. she wanted to keep hugging and kissing "baby wooocy" and cried when we had to leave her. it was adorable. and gave me so much hope for her adjustment to emmy.

we haven't gotten to see lucy since saturday because bella was sick with a cold at the beginning of the week, and then i was at the end of the week. not so much fun. and we really miss her!

welcome to the world, lucy mae! we are going to have so much fun :)

ten things {spring styles}.

so after the heaviness of yesterday's post, i figured we could all use a little lightening up (myself included!). i love that it's springtime and i'm dreaming of eventually fitting into normal, stylish clothes that don't involve stretchy panels, ample pleating around the belly and empire waists.

i really am so excited.

it may take me a while to lose my pregnancy weight and fit into said clothes, but i can't wait. getting back in shape after baby is a bit harder when you have kids into your thirties... but i'm ready for shredding with jillian michaels again which helped me get my body back after bel! for some extra motivation, i've been buying some post-emmy clothing here and there with money i've saved from my birthday and christmas. and it's a very rare thing for me to have extra cash sitting around since december/january, people. be proud of me, please :)

so here are some of my favorite recent styles. for me and bella... who is always fun to dress because she is *always* cute and obviously not restricted by having to wear maternity clothes. sometimes i get jealous.

(and so our littlest cornwell isn't left out, i put a couple cute outfits that emmy has in the mix too).

1. toddler anchor bathing suit (old navy).
how adorable is this suit? the minute i saw it on old navy's website, i knew i wanted to get it for bel! her aunt holly got it for her, along with a matching cover up and flip flops. she's going to swim in style.

2. floral shirt dress (new york&company).
this picture doesn't do this dress justice, but it was a steal of a find last week for a mere $24. new york&company has become one of my favorite places to find work clothes (or... future non-maternity work clothes!). they have really cute dresses and accessories and great sales. this dress has really pretty punches of color and is perfect for warmer weather. need to find some cute wedge sandals to go with.

3. cap sleeve paris dress (babygap).
i saw this dress a couple of months ago and loved it. who doesn't love the clothes at babygap? now that i'm having a second girl, i feel slightly more justified to buy bella clothes here since they last longer, and emmy will get to wear them too. but i still only buy off the sale rack. and love when i stumble upon an extra 25% or 40% clearance sale there. my mom just found this dress on sale and picked it up for me because she knew i loved it. i'm actually saving it for bella's second birthday, and using it as inspiration for a paris-themed birthday party :)

4. infant bubble romper (target).
target is one of my absolute *fav* places to buy clothes for my girls (and me!). their baby clothes are just adorable. and the most affordable around. emmy got this sweet little bubble romper at her shower from her aunt holly. isn't it precious? can't wait to see her wearing it!

5. lace hemmed blouse (new york&company).
another new york&company steal. i got this shirt for under twenty bucks. i love the yellow color, but my favorite detail of this blouse is the lacy hem. would look super cute paired with white pants to dress it up a bit, or some skinny jeans for a more casual look. can't wait to wear it!

6. multicolored ballet flats (babygap).
love, love, love these cute little shoes that i've been saving for bella to wear for easter! she has a dress that matches but these shoes are just my favorite part. fingers crossed that she keeps them on.

7. tulle rosette cardigan (babygap).
i found this for bella at the gap for about twelve dollars. it was on clearance with an extra 40% off. what a steal. i love this sweet little cardigan. looks adorable with leggings and boots, or over a sweet little dress. and the peachy-pink color makes it even more precious. so. girly.

8. coral one piece bathing suit (old navy).
i've been scouring the internet the past few weeks for a cute one piece bathing suit. pre-babies i never wore one piece suits except for maybe some in high school. it's an adjustment to wear a one piece, let alone find one that i actually want to wear... i ran into this cute suit at old navy this past weekend. with a coupon, i got it for under 25 bucks. although i can't try it on at the moment, i love the rouging that will help disguise my after-emmy belly this summer. and the twisted top is super cute, not to mention the bright coral color. i think i'm as excited as i can be about wearing a bathing suit within a couple months after giving birth. thanks, old navy.

9. floral skirt for baby (target).
love this sweet little skirt that emmy got at her shower. it goes with the most adorable onesie and leggings that will be perfect for summer time. i really can't wait for this girl to get here, and these cute little clothes make me even more excited :)

10. floral flutter sleeve dress (new york&company).
i think i got this dress for about ten dollars. yes, it's true. amazing! i'd seen it around christmastime, and just when i had some birthday cash burning a hole in my pocket, i found one left tucked away on a clearance rack and luckily it was a medium. which almost never happens. i love the feminine detail of this dress and--of course--the pink. adorable.

what are your favorite styles? happy spring everyone!

spring does come.

i've been mia lately on the blog front. partly because of exhaustion. partly because when i have free time, all i feel like doing is laying on the couch and watching shows on netflix. but honestly more because i've been struggling over the past couple of weeks and feel inadequate to express what i'm feeling into words.

it's amazing how grief sneaks up on you. as a counselor, i used to tell people this. advising others through the grief journey and actually experiencing it are two very, very different things. now i find myself as the one stumbling through this painful season of life where my mood is subconsciously dictated by birthdays and other various dates, memories, and random songs on the radio. these things have the power to take my otherwise cheerful, contented self and suddenly plummet me into a dark pit of loss and loneliness.

grief is tricky like that.

last week would've been dad's 53rd birthday. i knew the days leading up to march 22nd would be tough. but again, i had no idea how these feelings would blindside me. one minute i would be just fine. the next minute, nick would find me curled up in our bed, sobbing. i was also preparing myself to watch march madness without dad for the first time in my thirty one years. it was one of our favorite times of the year, me and dad. and last week my sweet niece, lucy mae, entered the world. she met all of her family that has loved her and prayed for her while she grew inside my sister's belly... except for her bampy. i kept picturing him in the waiting room with all of us; hearing his loud, booming laugh and seeing his eyes, wide with excitement. i could picture him holding his newest granddaughter and beaming with pride. there was definitely a hole there where he would have been.

of course this made me even more emotional, thinking of him not being there to greet emmy when she enters the world in just a few short weeks. he would be so proud; he had fallen in love with both of them the minute gretchen and i told him that we were expecting. if you knew my dad--or had met him even once--i'm sure he made a point to tell you that he had two grandbabies on the way. he thought it was so cool. i'm so very thankful that dad was able to know this exciting news... i just can't help but think how unfair it is that he was never able to meet either of these precious girls. they would've had their bampy wrapped right around their little fingers. why god didn't allow him to share in their lives, i'll never know. but i'll have to trust his sovereignty anyway.

it has been a rough couple of weeks for me, taking all of this in and feeling the loss of my dad's presence in such vivid ways. but i have hope. i have hope because i look back a few months ago to this fall. everything in nature was dying around me, and i felt it in such a real way in the very core of my being. i've never been in such despair in my life. nick&i had just moved here. we were still settling in. we had left the most amazing circle of close friends that had been our family for years, and come to a place where we were trying to make new friends, but didn't really have any yet. it was lonely and scary. we were both adjusting to new jobs, new responsibilities with living in a house we had just moved into, and new stages that our sweet bella was going through. on top of all of those hardships, dad was not good. i watched the dad that i had always known--one of my closest companions, biggest encourager, my rock--diminishing before my very eyes. as we were thrown into adjusting to a new life, we were making trips almost every weekend to visit him in the hospital in boston. i talked to him every day while he was there, several times hanging up in tears feeling as though my dad was slipping away. with each passing week, his voice began to get softer and his speech more slurred. his usual, jovial spirit was replaced with one of utter despair. poor bella saw her mama cry much more than any one year old ever should and i remember feeling so guilty one night as my little girl comforted me as i wept for my dad. and nick, in the middle of holding the weight of the world on his shoulders, was trying to stay strong for me. yet i'm sure felt as if he was going to crumble under the heaviness of his own grief and sadness at the loss of his father-in-law and all they had wanted to get to share together.

it was honestly the worst time of my life. and the hardest time in our married life.

but i look back on that season and i see how god clearly carried us. i mean: he knelt down, scooped us up into his almighty arms and held us as we walked through the darkness that felt so heavy and burdensome. he was our strength, our shelter, our grace. and we as people--and as husband and wife--will never be the same. as hard as that season was, god has used it--as only he can--to bless us and remind us of his character in such an intimate way.

last week, i was having a particularly hard day missing my dad. i was on my way up our front walk to step onto our porch when something caught my eye. we had started digging up old shrubs and landscaping along the front of our house last summer, so all that remained were a few stubborn bushes with gnarled, old roots and the remains of the existing mulch. but there, on that day as i felt weighed down by grief, i spied them. beautiful crocuses just beginning to peek their purple heads out of the dead shrubbery that surrounded them. i stopped in my tracks and almost started to cry. i knew it was jesus reminding me "spring does come."

spring. there is hope. a sense of renewal. new things being born; life being breathed into things that were once dying. and this, my friends, refreshes my soul. it's what pushes me through the hard seasons of missing my dad. the times where the loss of him seems too much to bear. the fear i feel when i think of losing anyone else. the uncertainty of what's lurking around the corner.

spring does come.

a verse that i stumbled upon when i was first grappling with dad's diagnosis seven years ago keeps coming to mind. psalm 84:5-7 says "blessed are those whose strength is in you; whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. as they pass through the valley of baca, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rain also covers it with pools. they go on from strength to strength until each appears before god in zion."

no matter what we may be facing today, may god give us the grace to "make it a place of springs."

flower "poms".

i have been working for a while on several little decorating projects for the girls new rooms. emmy will have bella's current bedroom and bella is moving into a new "big girl room" once we get her new bed and other furniture all set up. it's very exciting (although i have had a couple crying spells over it. i know, ridiculous... i'm just sad my baby is not a baby anymore!) must be a mama-thing.

emmy's room is painted "sweet baby girl" by glidden, a soft pink shade and will be filled with white furniture. the things i have collected so far are very antique-y and shabby chic and i'm really excited about how it's shaping up already... well, mostly about the ideas i have in my head ;)

i've found it very difficult to focus on things for their rooms. first of all, i'm decorating two rooms and both of them are very different. second of all, i'm pregnant. enough said. third of all, i get excited about a project, start it, and then get excited about something else and start that, leaving the other one completely unfinished. i've been all over the place.

however, this is the first little project that i've been able to finish. yay! probably because it was so darn easy. i want to do a little "pom cluster" for a corner in emmy's room, with tissue poms, flowered balls and some other little goodies. so i've been gathering ideas to make a bunch of pretty lil poms. i found this tutorial on pinterest and knew i had to make it. the supplies were pretty cheap and like i said, it was super duper easy.

flower poms

materials:

* styrofoam balls (i used two... they came together in a package at joanns)
* scrapbook paper
* flower shaped paper punch (i found mine at joanns for about $6 after a coupon)
* pearl corsage pins (in any floral section)

- cut flower shapes out with your paper punch. i loved discovering these little things... they have them in several shapes and i didn't mind spending six bucks on one that i know i'll use for other craft projects at some point!

- stack two shapes so that petals appear full, and secure with a pearl pin. fold petals up a bit to add some texture and dimension.

- stick pin into styrofoam ball. i did this in rows around the ball to make sure it was even; you'll also want to make sure that you stick the pins&flowers close enough together to cover the styrofoam. repeat until entire ball is covered.

- while i haven't completed this step yet, i plan on pinning a ribbon at the top of each ball for hanging in emmy's room. you could also use these to fill a bowl or as decorations for a baby shower or girlie party! be creative. they are oh-so-cute.

i'm excited to make my other "poms" to hang along with these in emmy's room! it's an easy, inexpensive way to create a beautiful pop of color and dimension.

happy crafting!

twenty one months.

i never realized how much i would love my baby girl until the day i gave birth and they put her in my arms. i also never realized just how fast time with her would fly... she is already almost TWO YEARS OLD. what in the world?!?!

i'm being especially sentimental these days because she's about to be a big sister. we're moving from a place where she has been our little love, to a place where our hearts will now belong to two precious girls. as exciting as it is, i also find myself savoring every last moment with her, because i know my time with her--just her--is fleeting.

i came in tonight from worship practice and as i was changing into my pj's, i looked down and saw her little pink chucks on the floor beside our bed. i almost teared up right there thinking "i will miss the day when those teeny tiny little shoes aren't laying around".

(again, remember i'm pregnant so some of this is hormonal)

but still... she's growing up so fast. nick is putting together her bed for her big girl room this weekend which honestly just breaks my heart. i love seeing her all cuddled and safe in her crib... she's such a peanut already i can't imagine what she will look like in her full sized bed! but she's soooo excited about her new room. "go see my big girl room!" is what she says almost every morning when i get her up. she loves going in there and checking everything out. and still... my baby girl in a huge, new bed?! i don't think i'm ready, but it's not up to me... i can't stop her from growing, nor do i really want to, because i know that although it's hard, it's good. and also, necessary.

here are some notes on our bella-girl at twenty one months...

- she is obsessed--let me say it again--obsessed with two videos right now: this stupid big bird one i got at sam's about a month ago that is super annoying but she LOVES it! "watch big bird sing!" is probably every other sentence out of our little sweet pea's mouth! and her second most requested video: "watch the beast, watch the beast!" yes, disney's beauty and the beast. a couple of weeks ago she wasn't feeling well, so we let her watch more tv than normal. since then, we've settled back into our 30 minutes in the morning, 30 minutes before dinner routine but it was rough going there for a while.

- another obsession: her stool that was especially painted for her by her uncle james. every night before bed when we tell her it's time to brush her teeth, she runs into her room, grabs her stool, carries it to the bathroom and puts it perfectly next to the sink to brush her teeth. then, upon finishing, she picks it back up and returns it to it's proper spot in her bedroom. it's like clockwork.

- girly girl, this one is. her favorite toys right now are her dollhouse, her snow white tea set, her baby doll and all makeup or anything that even remotely resembles it. she had an empty push pop in her hand for days on end for about a month claiming it was "makeup". and several times i have found her with bracelets on her wrist.

- she is super nurturing and it's been really fun to see that side of her come out (we like to call her "little mama"). she takes note of people's emotions all the time: "daddy tired." or "mama sad." the other night i burst into tears about something and she came running to my side, patting my arm "it's okay, mama, it's okay." sweetest thing in the entire world. i hear her saying this quite often to her baby doll or stuffed animals. i love it so much.

- she's also a ham, this girl of mine. the other night at dinner she kept making silly faces and we would laugh. finally she made a face and then said "take a picture?" once i snapped the photo, she had to see it right away. she loves to perform. which, with nick&i as her parents i guess the poor girl didn't stand much of a chance... we were both a little dramatic when we were little (and okay, i still am at times) ;)

- tantrums. oh geez. this girl can be the sweetest thing in the entire world, and then flip a switch and be writhing and kicking all over the floor. it's nuts. we've started putting her in her crib when she melts down so she can collect herself and it's been working much better. usually we'll tell her we're about to give her some time in her crib and she'll calm down before we have to. still, it can be exhausting! and half the time i sit there, looking at nick because i'm not sure what to do, and sometimes way too tired to do anything. but we're trying to stay consistent and crossing our fingers that this will be a short-lived stage. pleeeeeeeease!!!

- she's mastered the art of trying to stall before bedtime. her favorite is "rockoo, mama, rockoo?" (what we call rocking in the rocking chair). i'll rock her some nights for a few minutes and sing to her, and then tell her it's time to go to bed to which she pleads for a bit more time... how can i pass that up? some nights she sucks me in... and there have been a handful of times she's fallen asleep on my chest which i have absolutely soaked right up.

- her favorite food these days is probably ketchup. yep, it's true. she loves it. she also loves peanut butter and this girl can put down some pizza. and she is a fruit maniac. blueberries are her fav but she also totally digs oranges, grapes, pineapple and pretty much anything else in the fruit-family. she's also been into asking me for cheerios and then taking them into the living room where she'll pour them into her teacups and also, all over the floor :) i don't mind, though. i love watching her play and pretend.

- "yes" has finally found it's way into her vocabulary! before that, everything was no. she would nod her head yes in response to something, but still say "no". now i'll ask her a question and her little voice says "yes" or more often "yep" and it's the cutest little thing i've ever heard.

- she also has been saying "i love you" unprompted which makes me want to cry every time. and it's usually "i love you, daddy." "i love you, mama." or "i love you, mimi." such a little heartbreaker.

- she has a little buddy, isabella, that she gets to see every week. isabella's mom, tanya, watches bella for us two (soon to be three) days that i work. and bella LOVES it. the other day we were driving out to their house and bella exclaimed excitedly from the backseat "it's tanya time!!! it's isabella time!!!" that just makes my heart so happy. it's hard being gone from her three days a week, but knowing how much she loves them (and they her) is the hugest blessing! today when i went to pick her up, she was taking toys from isabella. when i talked to her about it, she scooched down next to isabella and got right in her face. in the most over-the-top cutesy, sticky sweet voice she started saying "hi isabella, hi isabella!" and smothering her with hugs. it's safe to say they love each other :)

- she dances to everything. and i mean everything. her favorite song is "party in the usa". i made the mistake of playing it one time when we were in the car, showing her how to dance with her hands up... now every time we get in the car she asks for "put your hands up!" which means... "party in the usa". the other day i was playing it and when it was over she said matter-of-factly "that's a good song." i laughed and said "is that a good song, bel?" she replied "yep." well, there you have it. the music critique of an almost two year old. miley cyrus rules (or something like that).

i could keep going on and on, but those are some of the highlights. i really want to remember every little thing about each stage and enjoy it all... even the hard times like the tantrums and the impatience(okay, maybe not enjoy those particular things... but survive them?)

bella grace, we love you so much!! you mean the world to us. and like we tell you all the time... "we love you to the moon and back." emmy is coming soon and you will be such a good big sister! even though it will probably seem like we're giving more attention to her at times, always remember how special you are and just how much we love you. there will never be anyone one like you ever in the whole wide world. and we will always tell you so.
love you, little girl,

mama xoxoxo

what's for dinner tonight {white chicken enchiladas}.

one of the things i miss most about living in texas is the amazingly delicious mexican food. i mean... it's so good. homemade tortillas. warm, salted chips and the best salsa. and of course puckeringly (is that even a word? probably not) sweet maragaritas to wash everything down. life doesn't get much better than that, folks. new england has many things we love, however its selection of mexican restaurants is not one of them.

sad, sad.

a favorite dish of mine to order at mexican restaurants in dallas was white chicken enchiladas... shredded chicken wrapped in tortillas and doused with a creamy white sour cream sauce topped with cheese. do i have your attention yet? seriously delicious. as i was wasting time browsing through pinterest one afternoon, i came across a recipe that has forever saved my mexican-food-deprived-life. not even exaggerating.

enter: white chicken enchiladas.

you need to try these. amazingly delicious. restaurant quality. enough to satisfy the cravings of this pregnant mama. and that says a whole lot. living in dallas for seven years made me a tough mexican food critic.

white chicken enchiladas

* 10 soft flour tortillas
* 2 c. cooked chicken, shredded
* 2 c. monterey jack cheese, shredded
* 3 T. butter
* 3 T. flour
* 2 c. chicken broth
* 1 c. sour cream
* 1 (4 oz) can of chopped green chilies, drained

- preheat oven to 350 and grease a 9x13 pan.
- combine chicken and 1 c. of the cheese. roll up in tortillas and place seam-side down in pan.
- in a medium saucepan, melt butter and stir in flour. cook one minute. add broth and whisk until smooth. cook over medium heat until thick and bubbly.
- stir in sour cream and chilies... however do not bring to a boil! you do not want to curdle your sour cream!
- pour sauce over enchiladas, top with remaining cheese. cook approximately 20-25 minutes.

note: i seasoned my sauce with about 1/8 t. each of garlic powder, salt, pepper, chili powder and ground cumin for some extra spice.

so, so good. we like to serve this dish with corn muffins and brown rice... and we totally get excited about having the leftovers for lunch the next day, let me tell ya.

enjoy!

"parenthood", aqua glow & new floors.

sorry i've been a little mia over the past week or so... nick&i both had february break last week so i took some time off from blogging. we also got addicted to the show "parenthood". like... majorly addicted. so i apologize for watching endless episodes of that on netflix and thus ignoring my little ole blog.

i'm sure yall have missed me :)

as i said, last week was february vacation for schools in the state of maine. it's pretty glorious here how they do school vacations... instead of just a spring break in march, we have a week off in february and a week off in march. it's lovely. and i realize now how much teachers look forward to it... maybe even more than the students (there are now six weeks left until april break...) ;) as usual, it went by waaaayyy too fast, but here are some highlights from our vacation week:

- as i mentioned in a previous post, february vacation kicks off a week of high school basketball tournaments here in the state of maine. it literally takes over the state, especially in the bangor area. it's been somewhat of a tradition in my family... i grew up going to games and played in a few of them (as did my dad), so it was really fun and nostalgic to take nick and bella this year to their first games! we followed nick's school as the girls made it to the eastern maine finals which was pretty exciting.

- date night. always a treat. nick&i kicked off our vacation week by date night on saturday night while bella stayed with her aunt holly and uncle scott. we went to our favorite little indian restuarant downtown and feasted on chicken tiki masala and naan... two of my absolute favorite things. at dinner we sat, going over our options of what to do next. get drinks? nope. i'm with child. nick wanted to take me to get my favorite pina colada smoothie and walk around the mall (he's such a good husband)? nope. i had a glucose test coming up and needed to watch my sugar. go do something active? nope. we were both tired. go home and watch parenthood? yes. absolutely yes. date nights are the best... especially when it doesn't matter what you do because you are together. awwwww. i know. i'll stop.

- parenthood. yes, we are officially addicted. we started watching two fridays ago and we have almost caught up to present time (if you are counting, that's two and a half seasons). we're nuts. literally we've been putting bella to bed at night and like giddy children, finding snacks, getting into bed and watching and watching and watching... anyone else a parenthood fan? if you're not watching, you need to check it out. but be careful... it may take over your life; consider this your official warning.

- beauty&the beast. i think i have the whole movie memorized. bella wasn't feeling all that great over break, so we allowed her to watch more videos than normal (we are currently in movie-detox; which by the tantrums she has been throwing lately when we tell her no more tv-watching is clearly not going so well). anyway, it is really cute watching her become so mesmerized by this movie (it's my favorite disney classic, too!). she literally stops whatever she is doing and just stares. and sometimes dances to the music. it's *adorable*.

- we have been wanting to lay new floors ever since we moved into our house back in september. as i've said before, it's my grandparents old house which is so cute and charming, but the carpets desperately needed to be torn up. the sunday before break, bella and i resorted to my mom's while nick got up all of the rugs, and then he and a couple of buddies worked so hard at laying our beautiful new floors! we chose a dark wood laminate flooring that we got for quite a steal. they look amazing and i'm so proud of my husband... he is such a hard worker and our home shows it! see? this is a pic nick took on his phone. how lovely. i'll take more pics eventually. i'm just being lazy right now ;)

- another one of nick's projects over the break was working on bella's "big girl room". along with the nasty carpet, it also was lined with a flowered wallpaper border that needed to be peeled off. nick scraped all the wallpaper off and painted it. we were so excited to get that done! i wanted a pretty blue color for the walls and nick didn't want a second pink bedroom in our house (can't say that i blame him!) ;) so, we chose valspar's "aqua glow" as the color for her room. every morning when bella wakes up, one of the first things she says is "go see big girl room??" she loves it. which is a good thing. now the next challenge will be the big girl bed... ehhhhh. not sure mama is ready!

we had a wonderful break and special time together as a family. treasuring these last few days with just bel. now i'll try to get back into the swing of blogging... i've got a few projects to show yall and some good recipes. so stay tuned ;)
