it's a love story.

i've always loved a good love story. what girl doesn't? you know... boy meets girl. first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage. bring you back to elementary school? thought so.

last monday, nick&i celebrated our third wedding anniversary. it seems amazing to me that we've only been married for three years. i guess it's because i just can't think of my life apart from him. he is not only my husband, but my partner, my teammate, my very best friend.

{i'm already starting to tear up. oh, dear.

i always prayed for a good story. i had grown up reading christian books on dating... if you grew up in a church youth group, then you know the classics: i kissed dating goodbye (joshua harris), passion&purity (elisabeth elliot), lady in waiting (jackie kendall&debby jones). i knew exactly what i wanted to find, what i wanted in a dating relationship, and the kind of man i wanted to marry. god just took me on a long journey of trusting his plan and his story to unfold in that area of my life.

and i am so thankful he did.

one november night, my third and last semester at dallas seminary, i met up with one of my best friends who worked with the youth group at a church we were both interning at in irving, texas. we had dinner at a local restaurant with a group of people we worked with, most of them being youth leaders and volunteers. during the course of conversation, they all began talking about setting us up with people (not an uncommon occurrence, and i always dreaded it) when all of a sudden the head youth pastor mentioned a man named nick cornwell. immediately the table *burst* into excited conversation about us meeting and being the perfect couple (which i responded with rolling eyes, i'm quite sure). after listening to them talk about this man for at least twenty minutes, i became intrigued. i had never heard a group of people say such positive things about anyone for such a large amount of time.

i was in.

before i knew it, they found out he was studying at the coffee shop at the church and whisked me away to meet him. as we pulled into the church parking lot, the youth pastor turned to me and said "you're about to meet your future husband."

and the rest is history. just kidding. it wasn't that easy. but i can't describe how amazing it was to watch god allow everything to fall into place. as he was bringing our story into fruition, he was also teaching me more and more about HIS love for me, which was the most amazing and humbling part. he answered prayers in almost-eerie-ways that have left us speechless and amazed, reminded in such intimate ways of his boundless love for us.

i read a book once in college that told the story of a young couple that had spent time praying over god's timing and will for their relationship and future marriage. the man didn't have much money, so he began praying for god's provision for an engagement ring if it was indeed god's plan for them to get engaged. one day, he was putting on his coat and reached into his pocket. perplexed, he pulled out a wad of money he found there. to his amazement, he found hundreds of dollars in his coat that day--an answer to his prayer, god's "green light" for him that this was exactly his plan. i remember being blown away by that story and began praying in college for god to show me that someday when i was seeking him about marriage.

fast forward almost six years. nick had spent the summer doing ministry work with youth from a poor community in illinois. when we began talking about getting engaged, i knew he didn't have much money because he had given up a summer of work. i remembered that story, and i began praying for god's provision, for his "green light" for us, whenever that may be; even if it wasn't according to our plans or our desires. one day, i met him in his office when we were both working at the church where we met. he was sitting at his desk, a stunned expression on his face. when i asked him what was wrong he responded "something just happened, but i'm not sure i should tell you about it" to which i told him that he'd better! he reached to a spot on his desk and pulled out an evelope that was filled with hundreds of dollars... on the front of the envelope someone had written "for the ring."

just writing those three small words still sends chills up my spine. i could write a book detailing all of the ways that we have seen god's fingerprints all over our relationship, engagement and marriage. it has not only been a journey of our love for each other, but more importantly it's been an *amazing* journey of god revealing his intimate love for us in inexplicable ways.

and that's the best part.

i always love to share our story because it's such a testament of god's faithfulness and grace. no prayer is too small for god. he delights in working in special ways in our lives to remind us that he is there. our relationship, our marriage, our life hasn't always been smooth sailing, for sure. but it's been the rough patches that cement us in christ and bind us even closer to one another.

happy third year, my handsome husband. i love you more and more every single day. i admire and respect you more than anyone else i know. no one else pushes me to be a better woman, wife, mother like you do... just by being who you are. i am so thankful for your tender, sensitive heart and how you chase after the lord and don't give up, even when it's hard. i feel beyond blessed that you asked me to be your wife. so excited to see where the lord continues to take us on this journey.

i.love.you.

what's for your sweet tooth {easy breezy peach cobbler}.

one of the things i love about blogging is staying connected with so many sweet friends from all over the country, from all the seasons of my life (and meeting new ones i've never even met!)

another bonus? recipe collecting. i have always *loved* getting new ones to add to my go-to-collection. what constitutes a go-to-recipe for me? a) few ingredients b) ingredients that i've actually heard of. although saffron is delicious, it does cost about ten bucks for a teeny tiny container. i do love cooking light recipes, however, who wants to buy about ten different kinds of flour just to achieve a lo-fat muffin? not me. sometimes, you just need those easy mix-together-in-the-same-pan-and-bake recipes.

a friend of mine from high school messaged me with this recipe and it fits this category perfectly! i've made it several times and it is simply scrumptious. it's the perfect summer dessert for a cookout or picnic. it just makes me think of warm summer nights, red-and-white-checkered-tablecloths and potato salad. happy, happy, happy. no fuss, no frills, just.plain.good.

and yes, it's not just easy. it's easy breezy.

peach cobbler

* 2 16 oz cans of peaches in light syrup
* 1 box yellow cake mix
* cinnamon&nutmeg for some spice
* 2 sticks of butter (eeeeeek. but sometimes you just need to splurge!)

- preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- place peaches and the syrup in a 9x13 pan. sprinkle with spices according to your liking.
- pour dry cake mix over the peaches.
- cut butter into slices and place evenly over the top of the cake.
- bake for 45 minutes. serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

see? i told you... so. easy. so spread out your red-and-white-checkered-tablecloth, light some citronella candles, kick off your shoes and enjoy.

a vintage garden party.

i love birthdays. when i was growing up, my mom always made our birthdays so special. she made all of our cakes; i have many memories of barbie dolls with skirts made of pink frosting, and rocking horses with licorice-whip-reigns.

i'd been looking forward to bella's first birthday party for months! i knew exactly what i wanted to do: a vintage garden party. lots of flowers, lace, jars&bottles and vintage-y decorative paper. i found images of this sweet lil party on my google searching, which provided the inspiration for bella's party. because of budget constraints, i stuck to just a few sweet treats for our guests, and handmade everything from the decorations, to the cake, to the homemade cake ball pops. it was a lot of work, but really enjoyable, and oh-so-fun.

my friend, amanda, of {aka}photography (see our images on the side of my blog... amazing, right?!) asked if she could take some photos to capture the special day. i was happy to oblige :)

the table

silver platters for frosted sugar cookies (dollar tree, $1 each)
pink cherry blossom branches/pussywillows (joanns, $8 with coupon)
lace tablecloth (borrowed from mother-in-law)
square white paper plates, napkins, plastic forks (dollar tree, $1 each)
paper doilies (dollar tree, $1 each)
wine bottles and jars for candy and flowers (washed out jam & spaghetti sauce jars, free!)
flag bunting: scrapbook paper & ribbon (hobby lobby, $12)
mod podged tray for centerpiece: scrapbook paper, mod podge and an old wooden tray (all on hand, free!)

i made these blossom branches out of branches i found at a park and my in-laws yard. i washed out old wine bottles and made "blossoms" out of scrapbook paper and tissue paper. placed on paper doilies i purchased at the dollar store, i loved these sweet branches!

i made this photo bunting by making the traditional flags out of scrapbook paper and ribbon and then took mini clothespins and pinned the pictures to the ribbon. nick&i took pictures of bella at each month in her crib, so this was like a decorative timeline :)

i made this rosette "b" for bella by cutting a b out of foamboard and making what-seemed-like-thousands of rosettes out of pink tissue paper and gluing them on with my trusty gluegun. i hung it on the wall from pink ribbon i hot-glued to the back.

for decor on the gift table, i took some old shudders my friends gave me and pinned various photos of bella throughout her first year using mini clothespins. this kept with the vintage-y theme and served as the perfect showcase for some of our favorite pictures of our sweet pea :)

bella *loves* strawberries, so i made her the yummiest strawberry cake from a paula deen recipe you can find here. i frosted it with storebought whipped cream cheese frosting. i also handmade her cake toppers--paper and fabric flowers i hotglued onto lollipop sticks--and stuck them into the top of her cake.

for quenching our guests thirst, we served pink lemonade in this glass dispenser and ice water served in vintage glass bottles.

i have become a huge.fan.of.cake.balls, so i wanted to try my hand at making cake ball pops. with the help of my friend, amanda (who mastered the dipping!) they came out super cute. i filled a pink basket of bella's with blocks of styrofoam and covered it with moss i purchased at the dollar store (moss for a dollar? yes please!). i stuck the cake ball pops in the styrofoam along with little signs i made on lollipop sticks that read "happy birthday bella grace".

i also handmade cards to label each treat, embellished with ric-rac, ribbon and fabric flowers.

my fav: reeses pieces easter candy! not only are they the best candy everrrr, but they were perfect for bella's party because of the pastel colors. i scored four bags of these on clearance after easter, and filled old crystal bowls and washed out spaghetti sauce & jam jars that i also decorated with scrapbook paper and fabric flowers.

bella had so much fun opening up her presents! including this handpainted stool from her aunt jessica, uncle james & wyatt! soooo special.

i *love* handmade quilts and we have several of them, thanks to nick's grandmother :) i spread them over the floor for people to sit on, and to give a picnic feel.

cake time :)

family shot :) i think in the background you can see our ugly apartment chandelier that hangs over our kitchen table... my girlfriends, amanda and jessica (who are incredibly artistic and creative!) made white tissue poms and covered it up for me... thanks girls! super cute.

perfect birthday! it was such a special, special day with our family and friends. i love having all these photos to capture the memories for bella to look back on. still can't believe she is one. trying to hold on to all of these moments before she is playing with barbies, wanting to drive, or asking me to shop with her for a wedding dress (tear). thankful for the days we've had, and SO excited about the days ahead.

we love you, sweet bella grace!!

hello, goodbye.

aaaaaaand i'm back. after all the packing, moving, and traveling across the country (thirteen states to be exact) i'm finally returning to the blogging world.

and it feels good.

this week i will be playing catch up. and it may take me a while, so bear with me. alot has happened since you and i last chatted. a cute little girl turned one. a woman and a handsome man celebrated their third wedding anniversary. and said family relocated thousands of miles away from their home in dallas to bangor, maine.

(yes... bangor, maine).

it's been quite a whirlwind. but a good one.

now, let me back up a bit. i moved to dallas seven years ago from living in ohio with my girlfriends after we graduated from college. i headed there to go to dallas seminary, and figured once i graduated i would pack up and head back home. to maine. and then came nick cornwell. a handsome--really handsome--guy with bright eyes and a constant smile. and that was the end of the that plan. we were married within a couple years and settled in irving, texas. moving to maine was something we had prayed about and talked about for a long time, but never felt fully released from our life in texas. and then came bella cornwell. a chubby-cheeked, flailing arms-and-legs, crazy-haired baby that stole our hearts. and we began revisiting the idea of moving and re-evaluating what we wanted for our family.

we decided a while ago, after much prayer, to move our family from dallas to my home state of maine. the reasons were various (aside from god's leading in our lives) but simply put, we wanted a simpler life. we wanted seasons where we could pick apples in the fall, and play with our kids in the snow. we wanted cooler summers where we could sleep with our windows open, go for walks in the evenings and watch the ocean waves pound the rocky coastline. we wanted a place where we could relax a bit more and live life more slowly. we were dreading saying goodbye to our family and friends in dallas, but the life that awaited us, along with god's promise and sovereignty, kept nudging us forward.

neither nick nor myself have the personality where taking risks and trusting god comes easily. we both struggle with having faith in what we can't see. so you can imagine how scary this move has been for us... and not surprisingly, god has provided courage and grace for every step. it has been incredibly humbling to watch jesus show up and continually remind us that we are following his leading even if it feels as though we are walking a bit blindly.

yeah... he's good like that.

we spent our last week in dallas packing up our apartment, and spending as much time with our family&friends there as possible. my parents (thank you, mom&dad!!) flew in on thursday to get bella and fly back with her so we wouldn't have to take her on our thirty-five-hour-road-trip. my parents and our friends so graciously pitched in and helped us put all of our belongings into cardboard boxes and loaded them into the back of our moving truck. phew.

saturday morning we met a group of about twenty of our best friends at a local diner for a tearful breakfast. as i looked around the room, i saw the faces of people that had been such a special part of the last seven years of our life in dallas. nick&i are exceedingly grateful for the blessing of friendship in our life--those that will never be replaced, those that will never be severed.

we pulled out of dallas at about ten thirty that morning with three of our best friends, matt&camille and candace and had the road trip of our lives. thirteen states in two and a half days, endless conversation, some music thrown in, junk food, and lots and lots of stops at mcdonalds (ehhh). through the mountains of tennessee, the hills of virginia up through the hectic highways of new jersey and new york and into scenic new england... it was quite the drive.

and then we were home.

on monday evening, nick&i rolled in to my parents driveway in our big, yellow moving truck at the same exact time we were married three years ago to the day. i love god's timing like that. he always amazes me in the small things. it's his way of reminding me he is there; divinely orchestrating the events of our lives... big and small.

we said goodbye to texas last week, but hello to our new life in maine. we will never forget our time there. dallas was where we met, fell in love, had our first apartment as newlyweds, had endless hang-outs with some of our best friends, brought home our beautiful bella grace and became a family of three. our hearts will always be tied to texas and the memories we have there.

as we pulled closer and closer to our new home, i sat in the moving truck with nick, holding his hand, tears streaming down my face. excited about what's to come. hopeful about our future. amazed by god's goodness, his provision and his faithfulness.

hello, maine. i know your winters will be cold, it will take some time for us to get to know you, and i know life will not be perfect, but i know god has lead us to you. and i trust him. and i'm excited about our life together. really excited. because you are pretty great. and god's plan is even greater.

"great is thy faithfulness
o god my father,
there is no shadow of turning with thee
all i have needed thy hand hath provided,
great is thy faithfulness
lord, unto me."

happy year of life, bella grace.

today our lil girl turns one.year.old. i cannot believe it! this year has flown by and it has been one of the *best* years of my life! it hasn't been without its challenges or struggles in adjusting, for sure, but being blessed with this sweet baby to care for and love on has been one of the sweetest gifts of my life. and parenting with nick by my side? even sweeter.

a year ago today i was laying in a hospital bed, being fed ice chips by my husband and watching the clock, just aching to hold our bella grace! this day exactly one year ago holds some of the most precious memories. being surrounded by our friends and family, praising god for his gift of life, falling in love with bella for the first time... and nick for the second, third, fourth... time(s).

because i'm feeling particularly nostalgic today, here are some of my favorite pictures of bella's first moments of life. precious.

i hope i never forget the feeling of holding her for the first time. the feel of her tiny hand clasping my finger. how my heart swelled when i saw the tears in nick's eyes when he saw his little girl. the excitement of our family&friends that filled our room. a year later, i love her even more. we've watched her learn to roll over, eat food on her own, crawl around our house with reckless abandon and take her first step. we've gotten to know her personality and know she has plenty of it :) we know she is a social butterfly, that she loves attention and that the endless kicking she did in my belly was only a sign of things to come!

tears are filling my eyes as i type this post, for i am just so thankful to be her mama. i can't wait for what's to come for our little girl and feel so blessed and grateful to be a part of what god has for her.

happy birthday, our sweet bella grace! you have given us so much joy and taught us so much about god's amazing love for us. we love being your mama and your daddy. we know god has such great things ahead for our little family and we will be faithful in continuing to pray over you and for you all the days of our lives.

"for i know the plans i have for you, declares the lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you and hope and a future." (jeremiah 29:11)

love,
mama&daddy.
